debunking the latest kurtney myth + the origin of “kurtney”:
+[Extract from the Montage of Heck Hardcover]
// scans from the MOH hardcover w/ my commentary b/c the book was fucking terrible and I almost got an ulcer from it
Long story short, this story she told is fake and this is what actually happened -
In Chicago, Illinois in October 1991, Courtney switched from targeting Billy Corgan to Kurt Cobain because Billy randomly decided he wanted his girlfriend back and kicked her out of his apartment. Nirvana was playing in the same city at the time and despite never being interested in Nirvana previously, her new target became Kurt because Smells Like Teen Spirit became popular. You can find our entire chronology of events around this time here.
At the time however, Mary Lou Lord had already been talking to Kurt, and he wanted her in Chicago with him, but she had to work a shift elsewhere. (Story Here // Note that this information was once posted on MLL’s FB but has since been made private but some screencaps have been salvaged where she’s mentioned pieces of the story in other comments). Therefore Courtney spent her first night with Kurt in Chicago by raping him and making him believe she was genuinely interested in him. Between October and November, Courtney spent that time gathering information on Mary because she was planning to sabotage the relationship to manipulate Kurt into being with her. This is despite the fact that she was going back to Billy the entire time because she suspected that he might be the bigger rockstar.
[This is where Courtney’s fake anecdote above comes in]
[[Refer to link above]] From November 4 - 8, Kurt and Mary were in England together when he was on tour there and around the 7th, Courtney called Kurt and told him lies about Mary to make him drop her completely. She succeeded and by the 8th (other sources say the 9th), Kurt announced on The Word that Courtney was ‘the best fuck in the world,’ also most likely due to Courtney’s influence. Then through out the remainder of his life, Courtney continued to harass Mary through her fans and through Kurt in order to ensure that no one would impose on her biggest investment.
She created a fake Kurtney story out of it because Hole at this point were touring the US and she wasn’t in Berlin (Amsterdam) until Nov 23rd [setlist.com link]. Nirvana were in Berlin before she was as well. Needless to say, if you look at her chronology during the anecdote, it’s completely off. So she basically took the reality that she used him and distorted it into a story about how he proposed to her, even though she has another version of this tale that she told 18 years ago. Something along the lines of, “Kurt got down on one knee and asked me if I wanted to marry the biggest rockstar in the world.” Similarly, Courtney also invented two separate accounts about when and where Frances was conceived to mythologize their relationship further. Kurt, in the midst of his abuse, and Everett True for his own entertainment, also helped Courtney design fake stories about where they met in order to legitimize the relationship.
It was meant to be 2015′s version of the Heavier Than Heaven myth that she ‘sent him a heart shaped box with seashells in it,’ which we’ve also debunked, for the new crowd of Cloves and Nirvana-ites. If you don’t have the references to disprove it, you’re probably going to believe it. For example, see this interview from Coachella 2007 (+additional link) where she tried to invent another Kurtney story where the chronology is easily debunked. She also tried to replant a similar version of this story in an unused interview that was meant to be in the MOH film as well. The point is is that she tries to insert herself in to win cool points so you constantly associate her and Kurt together to build mythology.
Not to mention that she also wasn’t on the cover of NME nor Melody Maker as her Jupiter-sized head insists. NME gave her a small concert review and she was given a miscellaneous page in Melody Maker where The Pixies were actually on the cover that month [June 1991]. She wasn’t on the cover of NME until 93 nor Melody Maker until 94 - all because her botched relationship with Kurt elevated her to a demi-level of stardom. More embellishment on her part, as always to make herself seem bigger than she is.
During and after her relationship with Kurt she planted a series of fake stories to start her cycles of headlines that become echoed to this day. She also attempted to trap other hot young rising male stars into equally abusive relationships to coattail their influence as well.
